SABC Publishes Draft Editorial Policies

On the 25th of April 2003 the SABC published its draft editorial policies for public comment. The purpose of these policies are twofold - they are firstly intended to guide editorial staff of the SABC in their daily decision making and secondly to express to the South African public what they can expect of the SABC. The draft policies includes a section on the SABC`s mandate as a public broadcaster as well as the following areas:
- News
- Programming
- Language
- Universal Service and Access
- Religion
- Education


In terms of Section 6 of the Broadcasting Act (as amended) to develop policies that are intended to ensure compliance with the Independent Communication Authority`s (ICASA) Code of Conduct, the SABC`s licence conditions and the provisions of relevant legislation. These policies are to be submitted to ICASA no later three months after the date of the SABC`s conversion. Hard copies of the draft policies can be obtained from the SABC`s various offices or from the SABC website www.sabc.co.za . Written comment on the policies should reach he SABC by no later than 13 June 2003 and can be delivered to any of the SABC`s regional offices. They can also be sent by post to SABC Policies, Private Bag X1, Auckland Park 2006. The can be faxed to 011 714 2253 or e-mailed to policies@sabc.co.za.
