On Thursday, 02 October 2003, ICASA announced the names of the successful applicants for 4-year community radio licences in Gauteng. A total of 13 community radio licences were granted in Gauteng and brings to an end a long process that started in 1997.

The invitation to apply for 4-year community sound broadcasting licences was published by ICASA in 1997 and the Regulator has been involved in the very arduous process of processing the applications ever since. Gauteng was the last province to be completed and although the reasons for decissions still need to be published, ICASA is no doubt relieved that the process has been completed.

The Regulator is expected to invite more community radio applications in 2007.
