Reassurance for community of interest stations

01 April 2001
This followed an NAB submission which voiced concerns from religious and cultural groups that community of interest stations are no longer welcome in the South African broadcasting environment.

The NAB said during its submission that many in the community radio sector believe that the Authority is no longer issuing community of interest licences. The NAB stated that this perception was damaging to both the community radio sector and the credibility of the Authority and therefore must be addressed.

Councillor Libby Lloyd of ICASA reassured the committee that perceptions of this nature were unfounded. She stated that the regulator had continued to issue community of interest licences. She also stated the ICASA position that if faced with a choice between competing radio stations when granting a licence, the regulator generally favours the station serving the wider community.
