5FM is a Contemporary Hit Radio station that delivers music, presenter-driven entertainment, news and sport suited to youth and young adult audiences in the metropolitan areas of South Africa. Music styles reflect international trends, and include a strong component of South African artists of internationl standard. Broadcasting in English.

History:
Capitalising on the vacuum created by the closure of the highly popular LM Radio in 1975, 5FM was launched by the SABC as Radio 5 in October of the same year. The challenge of strong competition from independent radio staions in the early 80`s, was met with a name change to 5FM and the introduction of FM Stereo broadcasting, making it the first radio staion in the world to do so nationally. It was also the start of the strong personality-driven character of the station. Top presenters were and still are actively sought and encouraged to use their creative freedom to keep the station energetic and captivating enough to compete effectively with the many other distractions available to a young, predominantly urban audience.
