Broadcasting priorities in government’s communications budget
The following projects were mentioned:
- Restructuring the SABC - Broadcasting Act provisions to be implemented
- Extending the SABC television footprint - infrastructure roll-out to take place in the Northern Province, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal
- Repositioning Channel Africa – service to be corporatised, will utilise all media platforms
- Bop Broadcasting – corporatisation underway
- Educational channel – will be discussion on a national educational network using multi-media
- Parliamentary channel – will be consultation on the establishment of a dedicated parliamentary channel
- Community radio broadcasting - will continue with infra-structure roll-out and establishment of production hubs to enable stations to produce their own programmes
- ICASA – will ensure adequate resources for ICASA
- NEMISA – will continue work on developing human resources in the broadcasting system
- Broadcast Production and Digital Advisory Bodies – both bodies launched in March 2001
The Minister also announced that a communications sector summit would be held later this year to address job creation and job retention in the communications sector.
