2025 NAB-NEMISA High-Level Community Media Roundtable
On Wednesday, 13 August 2025, the NAB together with the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa hosted a High-Level Community Media Roundtable, under the theme “Elevating and Sustaining Community Media in the Digital Age” at the University of Johannesburg Kerzner Centre.
The event brought together policymakers, regulators, funders, and various sector representative bodies to assess the state of community media and work towards strengthening and supporting the sector.
NEMISA board member, Prof Mpho Primus, delivered a masterclass on harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for community media.
The NAB Chairperson, Nick Grubb, outlined the need for all media stakeholders to support the sector’s sustainability and the NEMISA CEO, Trevor Rammitlwa, highlighted the need for inclusivity in efforts to equip young media professionals with digital skills.
The NAB’s Community Radio Committee Chairperson, FRANKLIN HUIZIES, shared the results of a recent NAB member survey on community radio sustainability and compliance concerns.
In closing the session, the NAB’s Executive Director, Nadia Bulbulia, proposed that a forum of community media sector organisations be convened to collectively develop a way forward and stakeholders in attendance resolved to have two further engagements by the first quarter of 2026.
