DCDT 30 years of the ICT Industry

01 May 2024 | Ofentse Mboweni

On 26 April 2024, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) hosted an event to celebrate 30 years of the ICT Industry. It noted the achievements of telecoms, broadcasting, and postal services since democracy.

The Secretary General of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), Mr John Omo, delivered a special address at the event, and we were delighted that in his opening remarks, he referenced his participation at last year's NAB 30 year celebration and how it promoted 30 years of democracy, diversity & freedom of expression in the broadcasting sector.

In wishing the DCDT well for the next 30years, the NAB’s Executive Director, Nadia Bulbulia, reminded the gathering that “freeing the airwaves” in the broadcasting sector commenced in 1993, even before the first democratic elections of 27 April 1994.

She also noted the significant growth and investment in local content, whilst also urging government to address the issue of regulatory parity and unlicensed online content services.

The DCDT event also recognised “fallen heroes” and called on the ICT industry to assist with providing input for a “coffee table” book on the history of the industry and stated that the industry should be celebrated throughout the year.
