International Human Rights Day

10 December 2023 | Ofentse Mboweni

Today marks the 75th anniversary of one of the world's most significant pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

On 10 December 1948 the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and on the same day in 1996, the Constitution of South Africa was signed into law by former State President Nelson Mandela.

The UDHR “enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.”

The theme for this year’s International Human Rights Day is “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice For All”.
