Minister announces broadcasting priorities for 2002

It was also announced that the Broadcasting Amendment Bill is due to cabinet in the next few weeks. This legislation will accelerate the restructuring of the SABC into the commercial and public broadcasting sections, diversify the pay TV and online TV markets as well as provide for ICASA to regulate these services.

On licensing matters, the Minister announced that “in order to enhance access and diversity we will explore the establishment of two regional television stations to cater mainly for the African languages. Research will be conducted on location and coverage to ensure universal access across the country”.
