NAB to host World Press Freedom Day webinar

On 3 May 2023, the NAB will hold a special roundtable discussion to mark World Press Freedom Day.

Professor Franz Krüger will lead the discussion and share insights from his paper "Greening Africa's news deserts", which looks at the role local media play in Africa's information ecosystems. The paper speaks to issues relevant to the modern African media landscape including:

• The causes of “news deserts” in Africa — ­areas where journalistic media are disappearing — and possible ways of reducing these;
• The sustainability issues and opportunities facing local and community media; and
• The positive contribution of media to civic life.

The webinar will also look at the state of press freedom in South Africa today, as well as the impact of digital platforms on the news media.
