Women Shaping the Future of Broadcasting: Tsakani Malwandla
Tsakani Malwandla (39) began her broadcasting career at SABC TV Outside Broadcast (TVOB) in 2009 after completing a one-year in-service training programme at Nkoka, following her graduation with a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Durban University of Technology (DUT).
She was one of only 12 learners selected to undertake their in-service training at the SABC, a highly competitive opportunity that marked the beginning of an exceptional career in broadcasting. During her training year, Tsakani was immersed in one of the most significant events in South African broadcasting history: preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. She quickly proved her capability and commitment as part of the teams responsible for delivering complex broadcast solutions for this global event.
In 2010, she played a key role in assembling and deploying fly-away broadcast kits for fan parks across the country. Recognising her technical competence and leadership potential, she and several members of her cohort were subsequently entrusted with supervising these fan parks, the first of their kind in FIFA World Cup history. The fan parks received widespread praise for their broadcasting excellence, technical innovation, and contribution to the tournament's success.
Following this remarkable achievement, Tsakani's career trajectory continued upward. In 2011, she joined TVOB as a technician, entering one of the most technically demanding and traditionally male-dominated areas of the broadcasting industry.
She quickly established herself as a respected member of the team, demonstrating resilience, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to mastering her craft.
