On the 17th of May, we celebrated WTISD 2021 under the theme “Accelerating Digital Transformation in Challenging times’’.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is celebrated annually to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT). This year marks 152 years since the signing of the First International Telegraph Convention on 17 May 1865, which established the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

                                                                               

COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the critical role of information and communication technologies for the societies to function. ICASA’s report on the state of ICT sector in SA - March 2021 indicated that in this global pandemic, the growth of digital technologies has played a pivotal role in ensuring maximum connectivity in our daily lives during lock down in both rural and urban cities. The report proves that in deed people have turned to computers and smart phones as a lifeline and tools to substitute their in-person activities online through social media platforms such as twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube etc.
